Description:  Break Free Alliance will be hosting a three-part webinar series to discuss and encourage dialogue among partners working to address tobacco use among homeless and formerly homeless populations. In 2009, Break Free Alliance facilitated an expert panel  to discuss tobacco use in homeless populations in order to develop and share recommendations on strategies to best address tobacco use in this population.  The purpose of the webinar series is to expand on the recommendations from the expert panel and to share new successes, challenges and promising practices with a wide audience.

Title: Overlapping Epidemics: Diabetes and Tobacco Use - Take Action for Cessation

Description: This webinar will provide participants with details on the biologic, clinical, epidemiologic, and public health evidence underlying the relationship of tobacco use, diabetes, and other chronic diseases and the rationale for intervention to address this complex problem is reviewed.  While the focus of this review is primarily on type 2 diabetes, information related to type 1 diabetes is also included where applicable.  Gaps in understanding are identified and future directions for improvement in care and population health are described.  Also presented will be information on cessation resources and current incentive opportunities for MediCal (MediCaid) populations in California. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Increase knowledge about the multi-level relationship between tobacco and diabetes
  2. Identify quality improvement strategies for people with diabetes and other chronic diseases who smoke
